Academic disciplines could be defined as divisions of knowledge. Disciplines such as History and Mathematics can be areas of knowledge. However, not all disciplines are areas of knowledge. For example, Chemistry is one branch of Natural Sciences. Therefore, academic disciplines could be areas of knowledge or subjects, which are special branches of study. Disciplines may overlap when knowledge and the ways of knowing in these disciplines show similarities. An interdisciplinary approach could be adopted when knowledge is explored through integrating two or more disciplines. This approach involves combining methodologies and disciplinary tools used in each discipline. Hence, an interdisciplinary approach could be taken to deepen knowers’ thoughts by comparing and contrasting knowledge from discipline to produce knowledge (Appleby, 2015).
