Tracheotomy and Tracheostomy
▫ Tracheotomy: An operation during which an incision is made in the skin of the ant. neck and the ant. tracheal wall. The resulting tract between the skin and trachea is bridged with a tracheotomy tube.
▫ Tracheostomy: An operation during which the distal end of the transected trachea is sutured to the skin of the ant. neck, or the skin of the ant. neck is sutured to an opening in the ant. tracheal wall. The resultant opening is referred to as a tracheostoma and usually does not require a tracheal tube.
