1. Purpose of the test
The purpose of the hardness test is to obtain hardness value, speculate the strength from the hardness value or compare the treated condition or heat-treated condition of a test specimen from the hardness value. In the case that you want to find out simple hardness value, there is not much problem. You can just choose a proper test method.

2. The definition of hardness
Generally, the concept of hardness is based on the experience of softness or hardness. The usual definition of hardness is the resistance to the plastic deformation that appears on the test specimen when indent some standard hard substance into the test specimen with pressure. The hardness value is expressed by the strength of the resistance.
It is very difficult to express the definition of hardness in a strictly physical way. There is a reason. Different from the standard physical constants such as the velocity of the light and the electric resistance, hardness appears as a result of combined reactions of many kinds of properties of the material.
