1. Goals
We will determine the ratio of charge to mass of electrons (e/m) by studying their deflection in a magnetic field. We will use a special electron beam tube designed to make the beam visible and allow us to measure the radius of the path of the electrons in the magnetic field. A pair of matched coils with a carefully chosen separation distance, called Helmholtz coils, is used to produce a uniform magnetic field throughout the space occupied by the electron beam tube. In this experiment, the ratio of charge to mass of electrons is determined from the accelerating voltage, the magnetic field strength and the radius of the electron orbit.
