The liberal education and the civic mission of higher education are under attack in this time of economic crisis and political polarization. Nowadays, some people argue that civic engagement is irrelevant to liberal education, however, some hold the opinion that civic engagement is an essential component of liberal education because the purpose of the liberal education is to prepare people for responsible citizenship, and the best forms of civic engagement are intellectually challenging; they are the liberal arts in action, or the liberal education learned and tested experientially. As for as I am concerned, I tend to the latter. In this article I am going to discuss the relationships between citizen engagement and liberal education.
