Henry Ford introduced the assembly line to the world of industry. The assembly line greatly reduced power and time put in construction, and enabled a mass-production. It was with no doubt an innovation in both fields of engineering and industry, but there were some side effects. Laborers now had to do repetitive work over and over again in a fixed spot; workers became like parts of a huge machine. Charlie Chaplin, in his movie “Modern Times” criticizes such practice of industry that made human beings as a part of machines. Every sarcasm and criticism in “Modern Times” aims directly at the Henry Ford’s assembly line and mass production industry.
