Samchuly bicycle is the leading company in the domestic bicycle industry.<Exhibit Ⅰ-G> Holding its tradition as the first bicycle company in Korea, it is maintaining about 50% of the market share and the highest sales and operating profits. The bicycle industry has grown stably but not significantly, even though some conditions have severely changed.<ExhibitⅠ-B> First, Chinese bicycle companies are threatening the market with competitive cost advantages and slowly but steadily matching quality. The growth of Chinese bicycle industry caused most of the Korean bicycle parts companies to become bankrupt and assembled bicycle companies to move their factories into other countries that have low labor cost conditions, particularly China.<ExhibitⅠ-A>
Despite this threat, major assembled bicycle companies in Korea including Samchuly are reacting strategically well, which means they endeavored to low their production costs.<Exhibit Ⅲ> But it does have its weak points; first, the cheaper Chinese bicycles took a more aggressive strategy into the Korean market after 2001, and added with the growing domestic firms like Alton and Corex, Samchuly can lose its current position due to increasing rivalry within a slow growing industry. Also, the Korean bicycle industry is traditionally very conservative and does not have a systematic industry organization, reluctant on adjusting to new trends.<ExhibitⅠ-E,F>
