Ban on Public Smoking Benefits All
By now it is common knowledge that smoking cigarettes has a variety of negative effects on one’s health including increased chance of cancer, heart-attack, and stroke. In more recent times, research has revealed a multitude of increased health risks for so-called passive smokers, or nonsmokers who are exposed to the toxins released from cigarettes through secondhand smoking (SHS). While cigarettes are legal and everyone has a right to decide for themselves whether to smoke or not, SHS takes place involuntarily. Recently, many states have begun to pass laws instituting a smoking ban in public places. Not everyone supports a nationwide ban on public smoking. However, recent research findings clearly demonstrate that SHS results in a multitude of deadly consequences, and that a nationwide ban on public smoking is a highly effective way to increase the health and well-being of the population.
