The Escalation of the Brotherhood
Most of the war movies attempt to show how terrible and violent the war is; however, the movie “TaeGukGi” depicts two brothers whose brotherhoods are tested by the war. The movie starts by showing scenes that illustrate how close these two brothers are. These consecutive series of scenes serves as an important metaphor for. The two brothers symbolize the two Koreas which got split in half. Before the war they were a caring family. The older brother, Jin Tae, thinks of his younger brother, Jin Seok, as the hope of their household. But the Korean War brings totally unexpected twists upon their fate. As the war breaks out both are compulsorily drafted to fight in the war against the other half of their own country. In this disorder, their brotherhood and the hope of returning to their family safe and sound maintain their lives together. Throughout its plot, the film emphasizes the strongly bonded brotherhood and the struggles of Jin Tae and Jin Seok.
