6. radiation therapy
Approved in 2007 for treating patients with advanced HCC
The use of high energy x-rays or other particles to destroy cancer cells.
Internal radiation therapy: use of implants inside the body. Radioactive beads may be inserted into the artery that supplies the tumor with blood.
External beam: outside the body
(rarely used for HCC)
TACE (Transcatheter Arterial chemoembolization) (1)
Normal liver gets 75% of blood supply from portal vein and 25% of blood supply from hepatic artery
Tumor receives most of its blood supply from the hepatic artery
Injection into the hepatic artery spares most of the normal liver
Embolization of the hepatic artery prevents systemic absorption of chemotherapy agents and induces ischemic necrosis of tumor
TACE (Transcatheter Arterial chemoembolization) (2)
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
RFA uses high energy radio waves to destroy the cancer and surrounding tissues.
Degree of liver function
Percutaneous ethanol injection therapy (PEIT)
Mechanism : Dehydration→
95% Ethanol: 2~10
