South Korea has achieved the successful democratization in the late 1980s when Koreans` democratic passion made it possible to dethrone the authoritarian ruler and to establish a new constitution, against previous dictatorship of formal presidents and the military regime. Since then, Korean society has become more and more democratic through popular movement and direct election system. In 1993, we had first civilian president. Then, the ruling party handed over power to the opposition peacefully with election in 1997 when actual transfer of power happened. The voices of the socially disadvantaged are heard better in comparison with the authoritarian society.
Even though Korea has got two turnover tests, which can be hardly seen even once in other Asian countries like Japan, we cannot say we made democratic consolidation. That’s why I think democracy in Korea needs to be improved to get ultimate its goal
