“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of the character,” stated Martin Luther King, Jr. in his public speech on August 28, 1963. However, contrary to his expectation, these kinds of problems still exist in human society even though so much time has passed since his famous speech. The movie ‘Crash’ shows these problems, such as conflict and discrimination among different people or groups, and it also realistically describes human’s inner conflict as well. This movie consists of a few extremely personal stories of different races of people, but those fragmentary episodes are related with one another tightly. Also, events that occur to them in the movie represent what real people are frequently experiencing in their society. Therefore, people need sociological perspective to understand those events which is related with race, social class, stereotyping, prejudice, and ethnocentrism.
In this film, race is treated as a major social concept overall. Especially, it focuses on racial subordination and tension. The setting of the film is in Los Angeles, California which is well-known as a “Salad Bowl”.
