<Media and Eating disorders>
One day I actually picked up one of those subscription catalogues.
Those are always falling out of magazines.
It was dropped by a woman who was everything I wanted.
Beautiful (thin), tall (thin), rich (thin), successful (thin),
Perfect (and God, she was thin). Perfect (“Media” 5).
This ridiculous poem is written by one of the patients who was suffering from eating disorders and it describes lots of critical issues. Yet, this poem’s story is not only her case. These days a lot of women have serious trouble because of eating disorders. It is a very urgent and big problem; also the frequency of the problem is increasing. According to research, “two out of five women” spend almost five years of their life trying to achieve their diet goals. And even more, “girls were more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer, nuclear war or losing their parents” (“Media” 1). Patricia, who was a working single mom, was 5 feet 9 inches, and her weight was about 150 pounds. However, after she went on an extreme diet, her weight was only 104pounds
