In front of an event hall, a girl reporter is busy preparing the news for the event with the staffs. With the sign of a director, she adjusts her dress and says, “Yes, this is live broadcasting of MBC (one of Korean broadcasting stations). This is where…” Suddenly, a man is coming out of the building. He sees the real scene of news in front of him and the news in his cell phone. He keeps putting his hand in front of the camera and putting it back checking his hand in his cell phone. All staffs including the reporter get embarrassed and the camera tries hard to avoid his hand. This was the commercial of DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) phone in Korea. With this phone, you can watch live broadcasting of television programs even without the TV in your living room. The cell phone is not only a camera phone anymore. It also has a function of TV. In this paper, I’d like to talk about the convergence phenomenon that is currently happening around the world especially in Korea. I chose this topic because I think this phenomenon is very much related to the technical determinism of Marshall McLuhan that says that technological progress causes cultural change.
