Ⅰ. Introduction

In Korea, the entrance to university is generally determined mainly by CSAT(College Scholastic Aptitude Test). However, the examination consisting of MCQ(multiple choice question) has been criticized on the ground that it lacks the validity, which especially applies to the English writing test. In this trend, English essay has been considered as one of the alternatives against that. Although it is not adopted in the present university entrance system, an issue of using English essay for choosing a student will be kept being raised in Korea. In fact, English essay has already been made use of in the process of performance assessment of middle and high school. In this regard, it would be desirable to think of how valid English essay is and what is the most effective way to put it into practice in classroom.
Making a good use of writing an essay in English is closely related to scoring method, which is well shown in the history of writing being made up of three stages like objective testing, holistic scoring and portfolio assessment. That is to say, the Korean situation and the history of testing writing can be said to show the scoring of writing has been one of the most controversial subjects with the probability that one type plays a positive or negative role in developing students` ability to write.
