The purpose of this paper is to present the results of our team project. The subject was chosen since it focuses on managerial factors in Korean and Finnish companies, which both act as competitors in China Market, too. In addition, it is interesting to present, how the company cultures, values and basic business features will differ within the companies.

The division of the labor in this project is based on both individual work and team work. The theoretical background is written by all team members. Anja Tuohino’s response area is the information focused on Nokia, while the contribution of Won Seok Lee (Kobe) is in Samsung. Heming He responses the case of the China Market; i.e. how Nokia and Samsung manage the competition in Chinese Markets. In the end of the paper, the conclusion and discussion will be made together.

The paper concentrates of the managerial factors studied in the class. Theoretical backgrounds are basically based on lecture notes, unless there is not mentioned any special reference. The data for this paper has been mostly gathered by using the web-pages of Nokia and Samsung. The two email-discussions with Nokia’s press office (4.4.2006 and 29.5.2006) confirmed that the all publishable information is on web pages and they are not willing to give any other information.

This paper has presented two leading companies with different kind of strategic choices. Nokia has chosen the strategy with core business while Samsung has chosen the unrelated diversification with various activities. Both strategies have proved to be good, since both companies are leading companies in the world in their businesses.

The managerial characteristics differ strongly, but on the other hand we have to say, that they represent well their cultures; Nokia as a Finnish company represents the western values and Samsung as a Korean, Asian values.

The biggest difference between the companies according to China case is, that Nokia is using the same structure and managerial characteristics around the world, while Samsung changes the strategy according to the market area depending on the local standards.
