-Women who take part in struggles (particularly of Turkey, Egypt, and India) and their contribution to developing a feminist consciousness
-The reason for participation: is that for feminist agenda?
-Are the goals of nationalism and feminism ever compatible?
The concept of nationalism can be defined as a “theory of political legitimacy, which requires that ethnic boundaries should not cut across political ones, and, in particular, that ethnic boundaries within a given state should not separate the power-holders from the rest”(Gellner, 1983:1). Nationalism has something in common with feminism. Nationalism and feminism have both been conceived and perceived as liberatory discourses and practices. While nationalism has historically functioned as one of the most powerful weapons against colonialism, feminism has and continues to function as the most powerful weapon against patriarchal structures of power that seek to oppress, exploit, and subordinate women(Giles, 2003). In this manner, these two concepts have some similarities so that it’s not possible to explain each of these separately; however, there are clearly different features between these such as their conceptual prosperities and the leaders’ gender and the goals. Especially the goals pursued by each one of these seem incompatible in nationalist struggles.
In my paper, I will provide examples about women who take part in nationalist struggles, and discuss whether these struggles have developed a feminist consciousness or not, and if they join because of a feminist agenda. Finally, I will state my argument about the compatibility of the goals of nationalism and feminism.
