THE IMPACT OF SATELLITE BROADCASTING
ON KOREAN SOCIETY
The emergence of the Direct Broadcasting by Satellite (DBS) is providing many advantages to Korean society. DBS attracts Korean because of its foreign broadcasts, international news and the diverse range of information that it provides. Furthermore, by the advent of this new media, viewers are able to become more globalize and be exposed to foreign languages. Despite the positive aspects, however, there has been a great concern over the cultural effects of foreign broadcasts. The impact of foreign DBS has not only blurred the cultural identity by colonizing the mind’s of the people, but it has also established a basis for economic domination in Korea. Therefore by comparing both the positive and negative influences of the DBS, the social and cultural impact of the satellite broadcasting in Korea, can be highlighted.
