4. Real Japan
What exactly is the culture of Japan? Because I am Japanese, people say to me “Hey! I know Japanese culture: kabuki, samurai, sumo, tea ceremony! Right? All of them are really exotic for me!” Then, I say “Yes. They are Japanese.” However, no sooner did I say that than I began wondering “Wait a minute, how much do I know about them?”
Actually, I have watched kabuki only once or twice in my life, and only on TV. What is worse, I sometimes fell asleep while watching them. I have a friend who knows about the tea ceremony, but I am also quite sure that the foreign people who are interested in it have understood it much more than her. To be honest, we don’t know much about it. We learn them in school, but it is same as we learn how to calculate the area of a triangle. They are not close to our life. Indeed there are many people who really enjoy them, but it is not a majority.
