人趨心慾에 有四不同하니 棄禮而放縱者를 名曰 鄙人이오
棄義而偸逸者를 名曰 懦人이오
棄智而飾私者를 名曰 薄人이오
棄仁而極慾者를 名曰 貪人이니라
There are four kinds of inclinations in the human mind. Those who neglect propriety and who are self-indulgent, are called the Mean. Those who neglect righteousness and who are idle , are called the Weak. Those who neglect wisdom and use flattery, are called the Syncophatic. Those who neglect benevolence and who are very greedy, are called the Avaricious(탐욕스러운, 욕심많은)
五臟之心은 中央之太極也이오 五臟之肺脾肝腎 四維之四象也이니
中央之太極은 聖人之太極이 高出於衆人之太極也이오
四維之四象은 聖人之四象이 旁通於衆人之四象也이니라
Among the five organs, the Heart is the Taichi, the Great Absolute, located in the center. Among the five organs, the Lung, the Spleen, the Liver and the Kidney are four symbols related to the four corners. The Great Absolute in the center, the Heart, of the sage(슬기로운, 현인) is higher than that of the ordinary person. The four symbols related to the four corners of the sage are similar to those of the ordinary person.
太少陰陽之臟局短長은 四不同中에 有一大同하니 天理之變化也니라 聖人與衆人이 一同也이오
鄙薄貪懦之心地淸濁이四不同中에 有萬不同하니 人欲之闊狹也니라聖人與衆人이 萬殊也이니라
There are four different catergories based upon the formation of the organs, but there is one thing which is common to all, the transformation according to the principle of nature. The sage and the ordinary person are the same. There are four different classes of the mind, and in each class, there are 10,000 different levels, because of the varieties of selfish desires. For this reason, the sage and the ordinary person are different in 10,000 ways.
太少陰陽之短長變化는 一同之中에 有四偏하니 聖人이 所以希天也오
鄙薄貪懦之淸濁闊狹은 萬殊之中에 有一同하니 衆人이 所以希聖也이니라
The changes of Yin and Yang are based on one principle and have four different aspects. This is the reason why the sage admires heaven. The degree of chasteness(정숙, 고상) and generosity, among the four inclinations of the mind-the Mean, the Weak, the Sycophantic(아첨하는, 중상하는) and the Avaricious-varies in 10,000 ways. Among this variety, there is one thing that is the same. This is the reason why the ordinary person admires the sage.
