Porter’s 5 competitive forces model applied to the telecommunication industry

Porter has identified five competitive forces that shape every industry and every market. These driving forces determine the intensity of competition and hence the profitability and attractiveness of the telecom industry. The objective of Vodafone's corporate strategy should be to modify these competitive forces in a way that improves the position of the company by improving its competitive advantage compared to other market participants. Based on the information derived from the five forces analysis, management can decide how to influence or to exploit particular characteristics of their industry.

Points that speak for high/low bargaining power of the competitive force and therefore mean disadvantage/advantage for Vodafone are marked with -/+. First the typical parameters for the telecommunication industry are discussed and then followed with implications to Vodafone's competitive advantage and its sustainability. At the end of the discussion of each force an overall conclusion for the particular force is provided.
