The Shoulder Complex
- shoulder joint -> a great degrees of mobility in stability -> highly susceptible to injury
- many sports activities -> repetitive over head movements(throwing, swimming,
serving in tennis, volley ball et al) -> consequently injuries related to overuse
Anatomy
1. Bones
1) clavicle - a slender, S-shaped bone approximately 6 inches long
2) scapular - a flat, triangular shaped bone
- spine, acromion, coracoid process, supra/infraspinatus fossa, glenoid fossa
3) humerus - spherical, with a shallow, constricted neck
- anatomical neck, the greater and lesser tuberosities, bicipital groove
2. Articulations
1) sternoclavicular joint - saddle joint
- fibrocartilaginous disk <- shock absorber and prevent any
displacement upward
2) acromioclavicular joint - weak junction(thin, fibrous capsule surrouds the joint)
3) glenohumeral joint - ball-and-socket joint
- passive mechanism - glenoid labrum and capsular ligaments
- active mechanism - deltoid and rotator cuff muscles
4) scapulothoracic joint - functional joint
