A few days ago, I had lots of washing to do because I did not wash all my clothes after I came to America. Therefore, at last, I made a decision to wash my clothes last Sunday. But I had no laundry basket to bring lots of my clothes, so I tried to borrow laundry basket from one of my roommates. I asked him, “Chris, can I borrow your laundry basket?”, “Go ahead.” he answered in a half-hearted way while he was watching TV. For a while, I was at a loss what to do because I thought the mean “Go ahead.” is “no, you cannot, you just go.” When I was in high school student in Korea, my teacher taught me about “go ahead” as a “go straight” meaning. Even though he did not like me, I never expect to hear kinds of that reply. In fact, nowadays, because relationship with my 3 roommates is getting better, I am surprised so much. Anyway, when I am about to go laundry without basket, my roommate call me and ask very natural, “why did not you take my laundry basket? You don’t need to? (Actually, I didn’t know exactly what he said?” but, very similar). I replied, “Sure! I need, but I am sorry, I thought I can borrow your stuff. I will buy it at the store next week.” Then my roommate realized I misunderstood his word and he explained to me about the term’s meaning “go ahead” That meant “that’s ok, sure you can do that.”
