3. The Errors
In this research, the errors of Korean English pronunciation are studied. And among the errors, I brought my focus into the vowel insertion phenomenon. The main reason for the vowel insertion is the difference with Korean syllable system and English syllable system and also the transition error of applying Korean syllable rules when pronouncing English words.
I have first overlooked the differences of each sound system and have discussed about the vowel insertion error and suggested what teaching has to be conducted prior and why. The point of my research is about, how can we improve the errors of vowel insertion for the Korean English speakers.
English Language is getting more important but its teaching method has not changed very much from the past. To learn a language properly, the balance combination of reading, writing, speaking and listening is critical. However, this has not been conducted very well and mostly special importance is attached to the teaching of reading even now. As a result, even a person who is well at grammar and reading confronts to a problem when he or she tries to speak or listen. The reason for the problems of Korean English pronunciation can be divided into two categories.
a. Lack of the consonant system of Korean language. Korean speakers replace the non-existing English consonants in Korean language with a similar one when speaking or listening.
b. The difference between Korean syllable system and English syllable system.
c. Accepting the wrong information from teachers who does not have English phonological phenomenon or rules to teach so called 'right' pronunciation.
