Markup is a way of adding meaning to data and a markup language is a set of rules that defines and limits the markup that can be used. HTML(Hypertext Markup Language) is an example of a markup language. In HTML, the data is text and is included within tags that are delimited by angle brackets. HTML is a style-oriented technology that designs the appearance of the Web page. HTML tags are fixed and describe how text between those tags look in a browser, and thus they are not related to the content. For example, <i>text</i> will turn out as text on the Web.
