I. Introduction
1. General Situation
Real economy in Korea has experienced a rapid growth. However, the banking industry has been underdeveloped, for the government has strictly controlled the Korean financial market.
Recently, the Korean money market comes to face a crisis with the commencement of the WTO system and the Korea's entry into the OECD. It is necessary to let the financial market operate free from the government regulations. In order to reform the outdated financial system, the Korean government established the Financial Reform Committee as an advisory body for President in January 1997. In the wake of a currency crisis in late 1997, the Korean economy plunged into a deep recession in 1998, registering a negative growth rate of 6.7 percent.
