The story of Animal Farm starts with a meeting of animals in Manor Farm. An old boar, whose name was Major, on the brink of death, summons to the barn all the animals on the farm of a broken down drunkard, called Jones, and gives to them his farewell message - the result of his long meditation on life. It is that the enemy of all animals is Man. Man lives by exploiting his animals. The animals produce their food of one sort or another, but they are not allowed to draw for themselves any benefit from their increased production. Man sizes it all for his own need, allows to the animals only sufficient to keep them alive and able to work, and ruthlessly exploits. Let the animals rise up, expel the enemy Man and run the farm as a co-operative farm of animals in the animals' own interest.
