The history of port development clearly shows that changes in seaports were largely a reflection of and response to progress in the industries they served, particularly the maritime transportation industry. Innovation in the design of ships and in the technology of loading and discharging vessels and the growing dimensions of ocean carriers were the prime catalysts of port development in the past. Today, seaport are operating in even more complex systems than ever before. Containerization has altered many of the traditional methods of terminal operations, and the emerging integrated, intermodal transport systems have modified conventional port functions and introduced new facets of port competition. Ports are increasingly dependent not only on transportation modes, but also on logistical, marketing and environmental systems. Any analysis of seaports, then, necessarily involves an evaluation of the trends and developments of the elements on which seaports depend. This means that the discussion must focus not only on issues such as future developments in ship technology, but also on marketing strategy, automated information systems, and integrated transportation concepts.
